Michigan Test for Teacher Certification
REA Editors

Test preparation materials are extremely popular at every library I have worked at. I have been amazed at the vast subjects that need test preparation. Libraries are often the only places to get this type of information. The cost of prep materials, as well as prep courses are often outside a student’s budget. In Michigan, teachers are required to be certified before student teaching. I am not up on the latest details of the test, but I have seen my fair share of students looking for this material and other test preparation items.

As a librarian, I know that these types of materials are essential. I have also had the argument with library professionals about spending money on test prep items “when they will just get stolen.”

In general, I am not a fan of tests like this. I have struggled with test anxiety my whole life and a multiple choice test is my worst nightmare. (I did better when it was written or discussion type tests.) I will save you from my speech about the evils of standardized testing.

Bottom line: Time to let this one go. I think it served us well.

  1. Wow, yeah, it survived and wasn’t stolen for 15 years! That must be some kind of record.
I’m one of those privileged folks that always does well on multiple choice tests. I don’t even need to know the subject, I just “see” how the test choices are arranged and can get a guaranteed 66%. Knowing the answers is just icing on top of the cake. Unfortunately, this talent does not appear to be teachable – if it was, I could make a lot of money.

    1. Let me know if you ever figure that out — we can start a business together.

“One man. One woman. Together, they blow open the secrets of doing well on multiple choice exams!”

  2. Why would people steal test-prep books? It’s exactly the sort of book I might want to borrow but would never want to own!
