Fructose: A Magic Formula

Diet Away Your Stress, Tension, and Anxiety
The Fructose Diet Book
Palm
1976

Well folks, this is the miracle diet you have been waiting for!

Dr Palm’s theory is that a fructose regimen can improve the function of the nervous system. Benefits include decrease of demand for alcohol in alcoholics and eliminate cravings for food among those who overeat. In addition, he continues with claims to improve symptoms in psychiatric disorders such as schizophrenia, lessons the “premenstrual tension” and improves the management of diabetes.

Sounds like fructose is magic.

I think you can safely weed this one.

Cooking for your troubled tummy

The Troubled Tummy Cookbook
Recipes and Diets
Roth
1976

Aside from the dumb title, this book was just fine for the 1970s. The troubled tummy part of this is geared to diets for post surgery, and specific conditions such as heart disease and ulcers. During the 1970s and into the 1980s, ulcers were believed to be caused by stress and overly spicy food. It wasn’t until the late 1980s that a course of antibiotics to kill the bacterium H. pylori. (The story of finding a “cure” for the peptic ulcer disease is a fascinating story.) This truly makes a good portion of this book obsolete by the late 1980s.

Here we have another gem from the popular Christian dieting section. Remember that the Devil makes you fat!

This book is more confessional/scripture lesson than a specific diet. See the “contract” below. Obviously Satan is behind this awfulness of being fat. The author’s life is a series of awfulness beginning with teen pregnancy, miscarriages, stillbirth, alcoholic husband, and probably more that I don’t remember. It was like reading a month of Lifetime movies in one book.

Naturally, every library has its share of diet/health books. They go in and out of fashion more than, well, fashion. This book takes the extra added bonus of blaming Satan. Evidently Satan sits on the Hellmouth with a big plate of cookies tempting all of us into the abyss of fat and calories. One of the big ideas in this book is about fasting. Obviously not a new concept in religious practice. However, the advice about fasting is a little too cavelier about a doctor’s advice. He doesn’t even mention particular health issues where fasting might be problematic.

Maggie Goes on a Diet
Kramer
2011

Okay, this one is horrible. I only found this title recently and doing a quick search I found that it had gotten some negative publicity. I now see why.

Maggie is sad and depressed because she is fat.  She decides to eat healthy and then she becomes a superstar soccer player and attractive to boys. Maggie is now happy. Problem solved!  (I guess those super helpful kids teasing and bullying Maggie were doing her a giant favor!)
