Submitter: I wanted to share this book I just weeded from the collection at the public library where I work. The actual content of the book is more helpful than the title would suggest, but the whole premise of strength being linked to body type is beyond insulting.

Holly: Yeah. It is. I’d also argue that anything health related should be looked at after about five years. You might get ten years out of a diet/exercise book, but it definitely needs to be reconsidered after five. This one is over 20 years old!

  1. I don’t think the title seems as outrageous as the submitter suggests. Taken literally women (and men) can indeed stay slim by building strength since adding muscle mass increases your base metabolic rate and helps you burn more calories and fat.

  2. I thought that the title referred to the strength of a woman’s character. (Women with strong moral character, of course, will have the discipline to stay slim. Yeah, right.)

  3. I can tell you one thing, it doesn’t matter how strong or slim you are. If you break your foot by accident like a friend of mine did earlier this month, it’ll be weeks or even months before you can walk decently again. She told me over the phone yesterday she couldn’t even drive a car.

    1. And if it is a permanent issue, fitness becomes even more difficult and weight gain much easier.

      1. …and ofcourse that injury/illness/disability must have been because you were such an uncouth overweight slob. (sarcazm eyeroll)
