Submitter: I found this book (clearly discarded) in our returns this morning. My (millennial) coworker exclaimed that it had been on the “free books, please take them” cart in the lobby earlier this week. She had picked it up thinking maybe it would be funny, but thought better about lugging home an outdated textbook. Apparently a library patron did take it home, but found it so unamusing that they promptly gave it back. I put it back in the discards area. I almost threw it away, but I guess I’m glad I didn’t. Our Friends of the Library group is actually starting to collect discards for book sales again now, and I looked this book up, and it is still for sale for $100.00.

Holly: This isn’t bad for an academic library, but a bit of a snoozefest for a public library collection.

  1. I think submitter may be making a classic textbook error (AKA, why libraries don’t carry textbooks). This is the 2nd Edition, but there is a 2019 3rd ed already, and quite possibly there will be a 4th ed by the time classes start up again in Fall. Older editions will not be acceptable for use in classes, therefore no one will pay $100 to get one. In fact, this is probably not even worth the paper it’s printed on. Save your Friends the embarrassment and toss it.

    +1
  2. Does it mention avocado toast? 🙂

I bet an examination of the course catalog for the nearest college would reveal why someone had this book in the first place, and I’m guessing the “gifter” didn’t like that class.

Hope the library can get a good price for this.
