Submitter: Here’s a brand new book my public library system purchased.  It’s supposed to help get your child to sleep with the power of suggestion.  The back cover says it’s a “groundbreaking #1 bestseller.”  On what planet?  There is far too much text to read to a child and the artwork is flat-out weird.  I understand the purpose of the book, it just could have been done better.

Holly: Maybe it’s supposed to bore them to sleep. I know I could use a nap after looking at it.

  1. My colleague, who has a two-year-old, says this book’s fantastic. Apparently it really works. Myself, I can’t imagine getting through it without imploding due to awfully ugly artwork and the writing that isn’t actually writing but some sort of hypnosis rubbish.

      1. I still have some of my grad school textbooks. I should do that and save money.

My son is 4 and this is the first time I have heard of this book.

  2. Roger the Rabbit? Did they get that name from Who Frame Roger Rabbit, which is one of my all-time favorite movies?

  3. I’ll take Dr. Suess’s Sleep Book any day over this. “A Jedd is in bed, and the bed of a Jedd, Is the softest of beds in the world, it is said. He makes it from pom poms he grows on his head…”

  4. My mother used Dr. Suess’s “Sleep Book” on me. It was on a record and the reader went slower and slower. Now just the mention of the book makes me yawn and want to nap. And I’m over forty.

  5. My 18 yr old could use this. Or perhaps the collected works of Enver Hoxha (dictator of Albania.) Ihad a friend that used those to good effect.

  6. It’s got hypnosis stuff in it. I’ve heard the audio book is much better, apparently you have to get the speed and cadence right.

  7. It’s not really supposed to be a good story, it’s a frame for embedding hypnotic language. It was written by a hypnotist.

Also illustrated by the author, because he never intended it to be published beyond a couple of copies for friends! It has since been reprinted with professional illustrations.
