Hoarding is Not Collection Development

The Disabled Homemaker

The Disabled Homemaker
Anderson
1980

Reading the first 2 pages, I was depressed.  I got the feeling if you didn’t live independently, bad things will happen. In this case, parents dying. I think the idea behind this book is absolutely a good idea, but it looks dated even for 1980.  There are no real adaptability aids, but merely discussions on how to “be careful” with regular appliances.  The take away: Ladies, just because you have a few problems doesn’t mean you get to slack on the housework. Weed it!

  • as someone who is disabled (mobility challenges) this book is good for a laugh. the chances of finding a place where they are going to feed you, bath you and park you in front of a tv are slim to none. most people with physical disabilities live on their own. those with mental handicaps are usually in group homes and most have jobs of some kind. definitely a weeder

  • I am very good friends with a blind couple and they keep their house better than I do. The only major thing they can’t do is drive.

We used to have a portable dishwasher at the house I grew up in–it was old and didn’t have space for a built-in one. It hooked up to the faucet and we used it like a kitchen island. I haven’t seen one like that in years.

  • The preoccuation this book has with independence meaning people with disabilities have to actually physically do all of these activities is very out of date. There’s now more understanding that if your disabilities mean you will struggle a lot to physically do such things, it is better to pay a personal assistant (NOT a carer!) to do them, and focus on more rewarding activities.

  • I hate to say this, but this book could not have come at a more appropriate time for me. My teenage nephew recently lost his arms as a result of leukemia.

  • I’d say the most dated thing in this book is the idea that a college would hold off on accepting a student because they have a physical disability. I sometimes forget the ADA wasn’t enacted until 1990.

  • Portable dishwashers are still around and they’re great if you’re in an apartment. I had one up until two years ago, and I have friends who have purchased them recently. Mine was an older model similar to the one in the picture, but there are newer ones.
