Submitter: Wow, get a load of that back cover! This book was in my local public library. The book is nothing more than correspondences between the author and his brother. 285 pages of typed letters. I am sure there is a healthy debate about whether to keep material like this in a public library.
Holly: Ok. Let’s talk about this. It is plausible that public libraries looking to balance the viewpoints represented in their collections bought this in the late 80s. I have no problem with libraries making books on a variety of viewpoints available – especially controversial topics like this. Almost 30 years later, though, there must be better choices to represent this perspective. I have a bigger problem with the age of the book than its message. (To be clear – I do not personally believe that homosexuality is a choice, or shameful in any way, but this is not about me or my opinions.) It’s just too old to represent current culture, attitudes, or even law regarding homosexuality, on either side of the argument. Everyone should live as they see fit, so if you truly want to “escape from homosexuality,” as Konrad says on the back cover, there are new resources available to you.
Submitter: My local library has three copies of this outdated book in its system. A great addition to a public library in 1982. Unfortunately, the data in this book, some from previous publication in 1961 and 1964, are woefully out of date. This book doesn’t even cover the AIDS crisis. It’s makes me sad to think that many of the men this book was target to, might not have survived the 1980s.
Holly: The survey is definitely too old to be of use, and the authors admit that they only got answers from older white men. The whole thing could be re-done with entirely different responses in 2015! It was a huge year for gays of all ages, people! This is mostly useless to most public libraries. I can’t imagine why three copies are necessary!
This is yet another of the “fix your gay kids” advice books. Lots of “great” advice in watching out for those excessively masculine traits in girls and overly feminine traits in boys. Bad parenting=gay kids because you need to be vigilant in your supervision. You need to slap a doll out of the hand of a boy and/or make those girls wear dresses or the entire civilization is ruined.
The fact that this book exists and that people believe it, it is proof enough that civilization is ruined.
I will be in the back, weeping (again) for humanity,
