I would probably be a sucker for this book, even though I know it will probably disappoint me. It did. Basically, cat massage is a fancy term for petting your cat. I happily tried to “massage” my cats. They did not appreciate and actively tried to maneuver my hands into their preferred petting mode. I didn’t even realize that they had a preferred mode until I tried to deviate from the normal petting routine. They were also not “nicer” nor, did they make grooming easier. They were mostly irritated that I wrecked the schedule they had perfected over 5 years of careful manipulation of my behavior.
Raising Your Cat
A Complete Illustrated Guide
Ah, yes! Another contender for cat “training” is here for your consideration. Cats are frequently featured on this site. (I think the ALA should consider a free kitten and a cardigan with every membership.) Mostly, because I just love the idea of someone thinking cats can be trained. I frequently wish there was a section in the library called “Wishful Thinking.” We can shelve items such as diet books, understanding your parents/kids, how to have an interesting meeting, and, of course, cat training.
The photos are just okay, and the information is dated. I think the death glares from the cats are also maybe a good sign that this book isn’t quite up to par. You must do yourself a favor and look into the world of Cat Flexing we featured last year. I think it remains one of the best books on this site.
Slave to my feline overlords,
So along with diet books, books about holding creative meetings, or books on parenting a teenager, this cat training book will join the ranks of other books that I classify as nonfiction pipe dreams. (It really needs its own subject heading.) Again, we have an expert patiently explaining how to make a cat “sit”. I attempted the “sit” technique with my cat and was treated to a condescending look followed by a hiss. Of course, later while trying to read, said cat decided it was time for lots of petting and affection. I readily admit that I am manipulated by my cats and there is no hope for me.
Yet another pipe dream is dead in the water.
