Rapper Recipes

Rapper’s Delights: African-American Cookin’ with Soul
Al Pereira
1998

Submitter: This is a cook book compiled of recipes from rappers of the eighties and nineties. It includes such delectable culinary fare as, “Flava Flav’s Rice Pilaf.” Ingredients: A bag of rice and all your favorite sh*t.
Also, “Kid ‘n Play’s Beanie Weenies.” Ingredients: A can of beans, six hot dogs (cut in half) Directions: Heat and eat!

Holly: This was probably a fun gift book in the late 90’s.  If these are the extent of the recipes, it’s not the most useful cookbook to keep around.  If your community is big on rappers of that era and you have space, it’s not hurting anything.  Otherwise, it seems like an easy weed (and a sort of weird choice for many libraries in the first place, given its less-than-useful content.)  Has anyone seen a table of contents for this book?  I’d love to hear more of the recipe titles!  Maybe “Salt n Pepa Shrimp?” (Boil shrimp. Add salt n pepa.)

  • “A bag of rice and all your favorite sh*t”? Laziest recipe ever, perfect for my cooking abilities.

    • By that thought process, I could put cashews, chocolate, Hawaiian sweet bread, potatoes, Dr Pepper and instant coffee in there. That sounds delicious with the rice, now doesn’t it?

  • I’m put it on hold at the local public. Hopefully no one will beat me to it. More info on Saturday!

  • No, if you keep this one, you owe every single “A teen’s guide to…” book an apology. 🙂

  • These recizzles are the shizzle, yo! A very interesting choice of book for a library.

  • Maybe “Salt n Pepa Shrimp?” (Boil shrimp. Add salt n pepa.)

But then what does one do with Spinderella?

  • Ha! Sounds great. But I prefer my beanie weenies in small flat cylinders, not cut in half. Yuck.

At least some of those rappers are still around…

  • DJ Jazzy Jeff: Come to full rolling boil, fade into obscurity for next 15 years or so

  • I prefer to watch my rap stars on their own cooking shows.

  • This would make an interesting addition to our cookbook collection.

  • Well,

I got the book. Some of it is almost unreadable due to the fonts and it’s very much of it’s time with color choice.

    But it includes:
    Queen Latifah’s Royal Turkey Cutlets
Rosie Perez’s Really Rosie Red Sauce

Inner Soul “got the dope French toast!

Young MC has you health in mind as suggests fat-free mozzarella for his vegetable and pasta medley.

It says Ice-T on the back but he’s not in the index or chapter introductions.

  • man I searched for this in my library—no luck. i’ll have to check local book thrifts! i want to see this one!

  • I just discovered your website today and cant pull myself away. Then I saw the post for Rapper’s Delight and thought it looked pretty familiar. Sure enough there is a copy of it on our shelves. I think it’s had a total cirulation of four since 1999! But since it is probably STILL the newest cookbook we own, it will probably live to see another year.

Besides, who knows when someone will suddenly get the urge to make Doug E. Fresh’s “Jump-Up Juice” or Just-Ices “Hot Curried Goat”
