This is one of those science/health titles all about food. The illustrations are typical 1950s but just weird enough to have me looking twice. Check out the illustration of the woman with a goiter. I also like the “unusual” foods to try. I guess yogurt wasn’t mainstream in the late 1950s. Oh look, there is some kale, so maybe this book is more relevant than I thought.

  1. The illustration of the woman with a goiter is quite accurate (albeit creepy) since bulging eyes are symptomatic of the disease. (For those of us old enough to remember comedian Marty Feldman, his “popeyes” were also a result of a thyroid condition.)

    1. I saw him one time on the Muppet Show, where the cast of Sesame Street also made an appearance and he was there with Cookie Monster at the end, who also has googly eyes. 🙂

  2. “I guess yogurt wasn’t mainstream in the late 50s”: I have a recipe somewhere from the early 50s that calls for sour cream. A note says that if you can’t find sour cream, you can substitute yogurt. Was *sour cream* that exotic in 1950??

  3. “I guess yogurt wasn’t mainstream in the late 50s”: I have a recipe from the early 50s that calls for sour cream. A note says ‘if you can’t find sour cream, substitute yogurt’. I was surprised: we always had sour cream and it never occurred that sour cream might be some strange exotic ingredient !

  4. To be fair, the substitution of sour cream for yogurt didn’t necessarily mean that either one was exotic. It just meant that if it wasn’t in your cupboard there was another ingredient you could use instead. I remember in an old Betty Crocker cookbook there was a list of things that could be substituted– I think there were several for dehydrated milk. Talk about exotic!

  5. I don’t think yogurt was very popular in the 1950s. It took off in the ’60s when they started to sell it with fruit in it.
